Autumnal Portuguese Homeware

Farmers market pumpkins

Autumn has settled and Halloween mood was at its strongest in the beginning of the month. I could not resist to do a little round up of Spooky Homeware in Facebook and Instagram. Look for #spookyportuguesehomeware in case you missed it. I picked up some old favourites as the Naughty Crow from Laboratório d’Estórias, but also a surreal tile from Surrealejos and the figurative ceramics of Bordalo Pinheiro.

As Autumn settles in and the cold, rainy weather slowly arrives, I started dreaming about nesting in my sofa. Although in reality I seldom get the chance to do it, I cannot stop thinking about warm blankets, a nice cup of tea and a good book.

I wrote down a list of some of the things that will just make your autumn afternoon something completely worthy to be looking forward to!

  1. Warm up the spaceSheep Stool by Burel Mountain Originals

From the village of Manteigas, in the center of Portugal, the aim of this young brand is to mix tradition materials such as the burel, a portuguese traditional coarse woolen cloth, with modern takes on design. They often collaborate with designers, and their stores in Porto and Lisbon are a feast to the eyes. A plus: most of the products are made by order and they have a huge catalogue of colours to choose from.

Sheep stool in mother and baby sizes are made in 100% sheep wool and pine wood and were designed by Tiago Silva. You can order directly online.

2. Put your feet up (and keep them warm): Manta Ninho 04 by Chi Coração

Chi Coração blankets are 100% wool and sold in two sizes: 130×180 cm and 180×220 cm. On blankets there is always a nice excuse to get one more: for the sofa, for the bed, for the ‘just a bit’ uncomfortable chair! My mother always bought beautiful blankets in Serra da Estrela from non descriptive brands but magnificent artisans. I cheer up to see all the new brands revamping this craft and bringing it to a broader public and to younger generations.

3. Because, sometimes, a cup of tea is all you need: Amalfi Sirena by DaTerra

Nothing beats a nice warm tea on a raining afternoon. I borrow DaTerra own words, who describe their products as ‘sophisticated yet simple housewares’. I like Amalfi because of their natural palette. Nevertheless, if you are into colors, DaTerra has plenty to offer.

4. Fighting the dark outside Tea Lights by Orikomi

Orikomi is probably more known because of its lamps, but their tea lights are just perfect to warm up the atmosphere on a rainy saturday afternoon. Made with paper using the origami paper art, you can choose from a wide choice of colours.

5. Soup is good for the soul: Pressure cooker from Silampos

Pressure cooker by Silampos. Made in Portugal.
This is my own Silampos.

Silampos has a vasta array of kitchen and cooking material. Their pressure cooker has been a companion during my adult years. This is how I learned how to make soup and I am quite useless in the kitchen without it. They are made in stainless steel and are available in different sizes ranging from 4.5L to 12L.

To buy it go to Silampos online store or if you are in Portugal to any good kitchenware store.
